Our Philosophy

The Nurtury Preschool uses a play-based approach when teaching children. The play-based approach allows children to learn and explore different materials that help them learn and navigate the world around them.

The play-based learning approach that The Nurtury Preschool follows is based on the Reggio-Emilia approach to learning. The Reggio-Emilia approach is learning through play. This approach is student-directed meaning that the child is responsible for their own learning. This approach allows children to explore their environment in ways that allow them to make meaningful connections to the world around them that are unique to the child themselves.

The Nurtury Preschool also implements an academic approach which means that the teacher will introduce concepts that help prepare each child for Kindergarten. The teacher at The Nurtury Preschool will introduce things such as letter recognition, number recognition, counting, early math concepts, science, phonics, early writing skills, and/or a social studies concepts. She will work with children in small groups based on the learning level of the child. This allows the teacher at The Nurtury Preschool to see where the children are developmentally so she knows which areas the child(ren) need more support in.

At The Nurtury Preschool we believe that each child is unique and that their uniqueness should be celebrated. That's why The Nurtury Preschool implements the play-based approach. The Nurtury Preschool wants to ensure all children are successful when attending the program and meeting their greatest potential!

At The Nurtury Preschool we strive to implement learning opportunities that are going to make lasting impacts on the children that come through our program.  Our main goal is having children participate in hands-on learning activities that help enhance their developmental needs. The developmental areas that will be focused on include: Physical, Social/Emotional, Cognitive and Language.

We believe children need a safe and nurturing environment to encourage their learning growth and to make strides with their development. The teacher will encourage each child that comes in the program to become the learner they are meant to be by taking their lead while also providing opportunities to prepare them for Kindergarten.

The word nurture by definition is to "care for and encourage the growth or development of someone or something". (Source Online Webster Dictionary )

The Nurtury Preschool was founded in 2020 after the teacher and owner of the company graduated from college. The idea of starting a preschool had always been in the back of her mind. The teacher/owner has always wanted to work for herself. In the middle of the COVID-19 lockdown, she started planning how she could start her own business in the middle of a global pandemic. She took a leap of faith and started planning out her business. She has always loved working with young children and watching them learn and explore the world around them.

The teacher/ owner of The Nurtury Preschool has a unique view on Early Childhood. She believes that each children is individual and what works for one child may not work for another. The teacher allows every child to learn the same material but will adapt it to meet the child's needs and learning abilities.

Our Story

Hello i'm Miss Emily. I am the owner and teacher of The Nurtury Preschool and Jr. Kindergarten Program in Edmonton, Alberta. I have a background in Early Childhood Education, as well as an Educational Assistant supporting students with Special Needs. I graduated in 2017 from the Early Childhood Education program at Lethbridge College with a certificate. I am a recognized Early Childhood Development Worker by the Government of Alberta. Shortly after I graduated in 2017,  I started working in a daycare and worked with two children with Special Needs as their support worker. After working with these children, I decided I wanted to pursue working with children with Special Needs.  I enrolled in the Educational Assistant program at Lethbridge College to start in the winter term of 2018. I graduated from the program in 2020 with a diploma. I have recently enrolled into the Psychology Degree Program at the University of Athabasca to begin my journey of receiving my degree in Psychology. I will be majoring in Psychology and minoring in Inclusive Education.

After graduating the Educational Assistant program, not many job opportunities were made available for Educational Assistants in Alberta.

I always knew that I wanted to work for myself and always loved the idea of working in preschool. This age is such fun, because the children go through major developmental leaps and watching them explore the world through their eyes is such an amazing experience. Realizing that I wanted to open my own preschool program, I decided to combine what I learnt in both programs to design a unique learning experience that is inclusive to all children. All children can learn through play but also thrive in a small structured environment. Using what I know and strategies I have seen work for the students I have supported, I believe that I can offer every child a learning opportunity that is unique to them, but will also see them thrive.

I have worked with children with Special Needs, ranging from Down Syndrome, to complex behavioural needs, ADHD and children on the Autism Spectrum. At The Nurtury Preschool, I can provide your child(ren) with appropriate programming that meets their needs. My program will teach your children the required skills that they need in order to get them ready to enter school.

Even though I have worked with children with Special Needs, I am no medical expert and it is not my job to diagnosis any children that come into my preschool program. My job is to support your child and provide them with a learning environment that is tailored to them. However, if issues start arising or a child is not meeting their developmental milestones as they should, I will work closely with you, the parents to ensure that your child is getting the right support they need in order to succeed.

All children deserve an education that is going to help them become whatever it is that they want to become.

I look forward to meeting all families and children that are interested in my program.

Sincerely,

Miss. Emily (Head Teacher at The Nurtury Preschool)
